José Luis Vallejo
José Luis Vallejo Jr. was born on July 26, 1986 in San Diego, CA and is the eldest of four children. His mother was born in Tijuana, Baja California and his father in Guadalajara, Mexico. José was raised in a trailer along with his siblings in the Barrio Logan community where he witnessed the social ills of gang violence and drug abuse at an early age. The combination of a challenging social structure, the looming stigma of his neighborhood, and his parents’ expectation of academic excellence internalized a deep motivation in José to excel. Through the support of non-profit organizations like The Barrio Logan College Institute, AnyBodyCan Youth Foundation, and Summerbridge San Diego, José was able to acquire a scholarship to The Bishop’s High School in La Jolla and gain admission to Yale University –graduating in three years with a BA in Economics.
God has been at the helm of his journey and has redirected him back to San Diego to redeem his life, help his family and serve some of our most vulnerable communities. José has a beautiful family comprised of his beautiful wife Gina and two adorable boys, Gael and Joseph who support and make part of his ministry. In addition to serving as the Director of Finance and Operations, José is most notably joyous about establishing UCAN (UrbanLife College Achievement Network) in 2014 to provide tutoring and college admission guidance to City Heights and Southeast youth.
